blogging my day

Okay so I haven't been able to get on here to blog as often as I was intending. My sister says that blogging just isn't for me. So I am sitting here blogging instead of studying for my two biology tests that I have coming up on Friday.
You know I just don't really ever know quite what to write so I guess I will just write about my day and if something is interesting obviously I will add that in.
I had my first Chemistry test today and I think I did okay. I think it is the best test Ihave taken in Chemistry for a very long time. My prof. likes to give us tests on lab days so I also had lab. We reacted sodium metal with different alcohols. Once we were done with that it was time to dispose of the sodium and alcohol. My professor told my lab partner to take the reacted sodium metal and put it in some water to get rid of any tiny little bit of sodium that may be still unreacted. So she did a little hesitantly. At first there was nothing so I went over to look and all of a sudden there was a pop and some steam shot up out of the beaker. It made me jump because we had been told what could happen if you were to add too much of the sodium metal to water at a time. Anyway I turned around to empty a couple of test tubes into the hazardous waste bucket and about 3 seconds later the beaker was on fire. There was a flame filling the width of the beaker and going a couple of inches above the top of the beaker. This was not supposed to happen although it is what can happen. I guess that there was more of that sodium metal in there than our professor thought. It was pretty cool.
It is kind of funny because I was just thinking earlier in the lab period that no one has ever really started anything on fire or made anything explode. And then it happened right in my very own group. So that was my exciting moment for the day.

A New Year, New Blog

So I got a guitar for Christmas and I purchased a lesson book yesterday. So I thought that I would give it a try. It came with a DVD to help with the teaching. I spent about and hour last night tuning and learning some basics. I learned three cords A, G, and D.
You know I always thought that it looked kind of easy to play the guitar when I watched others doing it. I figured that if I could just learn the cords I would be able to play no problem. Those ideas ended last night after a short time. First of all the way you have to hold your fingers to press on the cords is very awkward. It is hard to press down just one string without pressing on another. Then there is strumming depending on the type of music you are playing. And transitions. And there is the pain. Those strings are rough. My first finger feels like it went through a meat grinder. Never the less I did play those three cords last night and it was very exciting. My goal this year is to become a good guitar player. Hopefully by the end of the year I will have callouses on my fingers and I will be able to play great. Let's see if I can do it.
The spring semester has started and so far so good. It seems like this semester will not be quite as time consuming as last semester.
Today I had Chem Lab and there is a new girl who is one of my lab partners. I had her get a thermometer. Well this girl didn't know that there was a crack on the bottom of the hood just perfectly sized for a thermometer to get lodged into. So of course she set the thermometer into the hood so it rolled down into the crack. Well it fell on the ground and the thing broke and of course mercury everywhere. Well maybe not everywhere but it was in front of the hood we were working in. This is the first time I have ever broken anything in lab although it wasn't really my fault but it was within my group. Oh well I guess it could have been worse. I know because my Chem prof. has told some pretty disturbing stories about lab accidents. Other than that the whole experiment went pretty well it just took a little longer.
Okay that is all, not real exciting but I am going to try to post at least once a week or so. That is all.

Ahhhhh! Fall

The Schumacher house has been busy this fall so far with each kid in their own activity. We are running two or three kids to activities every night except for Wednesdays. Wednesdays are church nights of course and it seems that lately those are the best days for getting things done during the week. I am in school and this of course is quite a change around here. Although I was in school last year it is a little different this year because I am going more full time and I am spending much more time on campus. Plus I have two lab classes which take up quite a bit of my time. Things around here are pretty crazy sometimes but I love it. Happy Fall Y'all!

The State Fair and Canning

What fair is greater than the Iowa State Fair??? I say none. I have been fortunate enough to go two times this year. I went on opening day with my kids, and my inlaws. I also went today with my husband and my mom. I think that this is a great way to do the fair. You go one day and see all the kid things and do what others want to do and then you go another day with a smaller group and take it easy and do what you want to do. I like to sample the fair. My main purpose in going to the fair is to eat the awesome and very bad for you food. I think that deep fried on a stick food is what the fair is all about. I could care less about the midway and all of it's glory. I just like to try several different things to eat when I am there. I think it is good to go with one or two more people so you can all share things and then you can try more things. I still ate way too much and did feel a little ill when I left but really that is kind of the goal so I guess I accomplished it. I like the size of the Iowa State Fair because it has enough stuff that you really cannot see it all and experience it all in one day but it is small enough to walk around and sample most of it.
Now about my second topic canning. I am on my second year of having a garden since we have lived in our new house. I am doing a little better this year as far as harvesting the things I have planted and keeping the weeds down. I am hoping this is an upward trend and things will just keep getting better. I have been able so far to can salsa, sweet pickles and tomato juice. I am hoping to get around to pizza sauce later this week. I have to say that this is something I wanted to do but I didn't think it would be as much fun as it is turning out to be. I am really and truly enjoying this process of canning. There is something so rewarding about knowing that this winter when it's cold outside I can open up a jar of whatever I have canned and remember the warm summer days of gardening. It feels good to have wholesome homade food stocked and ready to go for later. I am already planning for next year what I can add and what I will do different. I really don't need another hobby but I think that canning might have to be a hobby I take on. Besides it is very rewarding and practical and useful so why not have a little fun while I am doing something good for my family.

Long time no blog

Okay so it has been a reeeaallllllllllllly long time since I have posted to my blog but here I am with an update of the lives of the members of the Shoe family. We have been pretty busy with school, soccer, breathing, eating, sleeping, and you know living. School started and everything has gone pretty well. There is nothing to interesting to tell about the school thing. Soccer has been good too. There is also nothing to interesting to tell about that either.
One thing we have done recently was camping with the whole Friesen family over Labor Day weekend. We do this every year and it is so much fun. We just sit around for 3 or 4 days and eat and play games. It really is the best time, as a matter of fact it is such a great time that it is starting to spread to non-Friesen people. We have added a couple people to our group who are not of Friesen descent. That is right the excitement is starting to sweep the nation and soon we may have the whole continent of North America wanting in on what is going on with our AWESOME little family get together. But to those of you who are reading this and are thinking wow I would really like to get in on that you should know that there are very high requirements to get in on this great and wonderful event. These requirements are a family secret kept in a vault and only a very select few are able to acess it and most of those people are dead and the others don't know who they are, so good luck on getting in. Since most of you will not be able to join us because of previously mentioned reasons I would like to let you know about some of the great things that go on during our wonderful weekend. The days go like this. Wake up eat play games eat play games eat swim if it is hot enough eat eat again then eat supper, play games and continue eating until bedtime. It is so great there is also a time when some crazy people go and do a little karaoke and it is usuall pretty funny but this year two of my sisters and two of my cousins sang this song and they were pretty great I think they might be starting thier own group soon, well maybe not but for karaoke and compared to most of what I heard that night they were the best ones. Well enough about the camping thing and on to another subject.
Last night Adam and I went to a Gaither Homecoming concert. It was pretty good and we got to watch the concert in two very different ways. We sat up high for the first part of the concert and for me that was sort of scary because I have this thing about not liking up high places. I just sat back in my seat and tried not to look down. I just watched the screen, also it kind of helped when the lights went down. At intermission Adam called my brother in-law T.J. Wright (he was once a part of a very famous singing group called Four His Glory) and he told us about these two empty seats right behind them. He told us we could come on down and sit there for the rest of the concert. Well I didn't have to be told twice. I was pretty sure that once I left my seat way up high I wasn't going to want to face climbing back down to get to my seat again so I said YES to Adam who was talking to T.J. and started to head towards a much closer to the ground seat. So we were able to watch the rest of the concert from the third row. We went from watching two inch tall people singing on stage to basically being able to see their nose hairs in a matter of minutes. I would say it is pretty great being related to such a famous person who could get us in to such great seats. It was pretty cool to be able to experience the concert from two very different veiwpoints. Well I think I have gone on long enough now so I will quit but hopefully be back to update all of you on what is going on. See Ya
