The State Fair and Canning

What fair is greater than the Iowa State Fair??? I say none. I have been fortunate enough to go two times this year. I went on opening day with my kids, and my inlaws. I also went today with my husband and my mom. I think that this is a great way to do the fair. You go one day and see all the kid things and do what others want to do and then you go another day with a smaller group and take it easy and do what you want to do. I like to sample the fair. My main purpose in going to the fair is to eat the awesome and very bad for you food. I think that deep fried on a stick food is what the fair is all about. I could care less about the midway and all of it's glory. I just like to try several different things to eat when I am there. I think it is good to go with one or two more people so you can all share things and then you can try more things. I still ate way too much and did feel a little ill when I left but really that is kind of the goal so I guess I accomplished it. I like the size of the Iowa State Fair because it has enough stuff that you really cannot see it all and experience it all in one day but it is small enough to walk around and sample most of it.
Now about my second topic canning. I am on my second year of having a garden since we have lived in our new house. I am doing a little better this year as far as harvesting the things I have planted and keeping the weeds down. I am hoping this is an upward trend and things will just keep getting better. I have been able so far to can salsa, sweet pickles and tomato juice. I am hoping to get around to pizza sauce later this week. I have to say that this is something I wanted to do but I didn't think it would be as much fun as it is turning out to be. I am really and truly enjoying this process of canning. There is something so rewarding about knowing that this winter when it's cold outside I can open up a jar of whatever I have canned and remember the warm summer days of gardening. It feels good to have wholesome homade food stocked and ready to go for later. I am already planning for next year what I can add and what I will do different. I really don't need another hobby but I think that canning might have to be a hobby I take on. Besides it is very rewarding and practical and useful so why not have a little fun while I am doing something good for my family.
